Have you ever tried to change a habit and then became discouraged because it wasn’t as bright and sunny as from afar. This is one of the reasons why people get stuck in their ways. Change can be scary. There’s the fear of the unknown and also the recognition of challenge. Some of us shy away from uncomfortable times.
If we know it’s going to be hard, why bother?
That’s where being in the right mindset comes in. When you truly want something enough, you’ll go through all the discomfort of getting to your goal. Drawbacks are inevitable in situations of change, but you have to rise above it to achieve the end result.
From my experience, the first day of making a habit change is easy. You’re excited and “in the zone.” By the second or third day, temptations arise. If your change is toward a healthier diet, junk food in your path may be calling your name. If you are trying to get better sleep, a friend may invite you to go out that night. At first, you may have no problem resisting, but after awhile there’s part of you that wants to fall back into your old ways.
It’s normal to have discomforts as things change. If you’re prepared for them from the start, it’s easier to move past them. Keep the right perspective. Recognize that the journey of change won’t be easy, but commit to doing it anyway.
When you know why you want to change and have a deep desire to do so, you’ll be more likely to stick with it. Don’t be discouraged when a setback occurs. It’s just one part of the journey that you’ll get through with the right mindset.
